How to level a pool table
Updated July 13, 2026 · About 90 minutes
A pool table needs more than one quick center reading. The frame, slate, cloth, legs, and floor all interact, so the dependable method is to measure in several places, adjust in small steps, and finish with a slow roll test.

Check both the long and short axes without installing an app.
Know the limit of a phone level. It is excellent for finding a broad tilt and comparing locations, but a slate adjustment, cloth replacement, or damaged frame may need a billiards technician.
Pool-table leveling steps
- Let the table settle. Put it in its final position, install the normal accessories, and let the frame sit before making the final adjustment. Do not level a table while it is being moved.
- Calibrate your phone. Open the browser level and calibrate on a known flat reference. Remove a thick case if it prevents the phone from sitting consistently.
- Measure a grid. Lay the phone on the playing surface along the long axis, then the short axis. Check the center, both ends, and several areas between them. Keep it away from pockets, rails, and seams.
- Identify the pattern. A similar reading everywhere suggests a broad tilt. Readings that change across the table can indicate twist, support problems, or an issue that leg adjustments alone will not fix.
- Adjust the supports slowly. Use the table's built-in levelers or approved shims. Make one small change at a time, then wait for the frame to settle before measuring again. Never lift a heavy table from an unsafe point.
- Re-check the full grid. A correction at one leg can change another corner. Repeat the long-axis and short-axis checks until the readings are consistent across the playing area.
- Roll a clean cue ball. Send it slowly in several directions. A repeatable drift is useful evidence, but interpret it with the level readings because cloth nap, ball condition, rails, and table geometry can also affect the path.
Slate, cloth, and floor problems
If the phone readings disagree sharply from one part of the table to another, stop chasing the number with leg adjustments. The slate may need professional leveling, the cloth may have a defect, or the floor/support system may be flexing. Protect the table by following its manufacturer instructions before placing shims or loosening structural hardware.
FAQ
Where do I put a level?
Check multiple positions along both the length and width of the playing surface, avoiding pockets, rails, and seams.
Can I use a phone to level a pool table?
Yes, as a measurement aid. It complements the manufacturer's adjustment process but cannot diagnose every slate, cloth, or frame problem.
Why does the cue ball drift?
Possible causes include table twist, cloth nap, a dirty or damaged ball, rails, or floor movement. Confirm the table readings and repeat the roll with a clean ball.
